Lakewood Committee Selects Democrat Coles as Mayor for 2017

Ray Coles

LAKEWOOD – In an “unprecedented” move, the majority-Republican Lakewood Township Committee has selected Democrat Ray Coles to be the township’s mayor for the year 2017, according to a report.

The Lakewood Scoop, a local news website focused on the township, first reported the story earlier Monday following Lakewood’s annual reorganization meeting.

Committeeman Ray Coles, a Democrat, has been selected by the township committee as Lakewood’s 2017 mayor, while Menashe Miller, who served as mayor in 2016, will serve as the township’s deputy mayor.

The move by Lakewood’s elected officials to select a Democratic mayor while the committee remained controlled by the Republicans was without precedent, as in the past 10 years the title of mayor has alternated between the three members of the Republican majority.
