TOMS RIVER – The New Jersey Pinelands Commission will hold a special meeting at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Pine Belt Arena, located at the grounds of Toms River High School North.
The Pinelands Commission’s purpose for holding the special meeting Wednesday morning is to collect comments from the public on a controversial pipeline application submitted by New Jersey Natural Gas. The utility company’s pipeline proposal, known as the Southern Reliability Link, would run through portions of Ocean, Burlington and Monmouth counties.
The pipeline approval process has been the subject of both criticism and litigation spearheaded by groups including the Pinelands Preservation Alliance and New Jersey Sierra Club. The environmentalists have called the pipeline unnecessary and dangerous to sensitive environmental areas located along the proposed route of the pipeline. Pipeline proponents have argued in favor the infrastructure and economic benefits of the project.
Members of the public will have the opportunity to share their opinion and comments with members of the commission at Wednesday’s public meeting. According to a copy of the meeting agenda posted on the Pinelands Commission’s website, those making comments for or against the pipeline will be limited to three minutes of time per person.
